SIMPLIFIED TECHNICAL ENGLISH. AN INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL WRITING

16.09.2020, 18.00-19.30

Language is a method of communication, a structured system that must be understood by both the sender and receiver in order to communicate clearly. English is the most commonly spoken language in the world. Out of 1.120 billion English speakers, 898.4 million speak it as a second language. However, in a multinational environment people of different origins tend to speak English differently leading to misunderstandings. In technical industries these misunderstandings may lead to serious risks to both people and property.
Simplified Technical English is a controlled language used in technical writing. It is a form of English designed with a purpose of writing clear technical documentation that can be understood across cultures by people with basic understanding of English. In this workshop we will take a look at the goals and specifications of the STE and see how simplification leads to better communication. We will also have exercises where we will rewrite complicated messages and see how much clearer they become when written according to standards.
The workshop will also touch on the subject of technical communication and technical writing and the career opportunities in this growing occupation field. The training will be held in English. At least B1 English level is recommended to participate.
